Electronic Research Administration

Sponsors are providing methods for conducting research administration electronically. The Office of Research Administration (ORA) has developed the following guidelines for submitting grantee information using a variety of electronic interfaces.

Note: ORA should receive all proposal documents necessary for internal University processing such as the Transmittal and Approval form, Investigator Financial Conflict of Interest form, Principal Investigator Assurance form (NIH funding only), and access to the complete electronic application ten (10) business days prior to the submission deadline. In addition, Grants & Contracts must have the proposal budget for review, and then approval ten (10) business prior to the submission deadline.

Additional Resources:

Grants.gov
Grants.gov is a web-based electronic system that provides a simple, unified electronic storefront for interactions between grant applicants and the Federal agencies that manage grant funds. Applications will be submitted electronically by institutions through the Grants.gov portal and forwarded to the respective funding agencies.

  • Find Grant Opportunities: Search all grant opportunities at Grants.gov
  • Grants.gov: Apply for Grants
  • Download Software: To download applications, you need to install PureEdge Viewer. This small, free program allows you to access, complete and submit applications electronically and securely.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

NIH has developed a system to facilitate the exchange of information between NIH and applicant organizations. The "eRA Commons," which stands for electronic Research Administration, is the web interface where NIH and the grantee community conduct their extramural research administration business electronically. In addition, NIH is transitioning to electronic submission of proposals through Grants.gov which interfaces with the eRA Commons.

DOD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP)
The CDMRP directs the Breast Cancer Research Program, Prostate Cancer Research Program, Ovarian Research Program, the Neurodevelopment Research Program, and other specified areas identified/funded by Congress and the Department of Defense.

  • Full proposals requesting funding from the CDMRP will be submitted through Grants.gov. Individual Program Announcements and required forms can also be found on this Web site.
  • A Pre-Application will be required for all proposals, submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website, https://cdmrp.org.

Proposal Central
Proposal CENTRAL is shared by many government, non-profit, and private grant-making organizations to facilitate electronic research administration. Some of the organizations include the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, Arthritis Foundation, Cancer Research Foundation of America, and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

PI registers self on proposalCENTRAL and fills out his professional profile. UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is already registered as an institution on the system. Dr. Melera is registered as the Signing Official. PI creates proposal by entering required information and uploading any necessary files. After ORA reviews a hard copy of the complete application proposal, the PI submits application electronically.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
The National Science Foundation uses the FastLane interactive real-time system to conduct NSF business electronically. With the NSF FastLane "Proposal Preparation" application, PIs can prepare proposals and save them as works in progress. Once the ORA is granted access to complete application proposal for review and approval, it is submitted to NSF using the "Submit Proposal" module of the FastLane application.
