Investigational Drug Service
at UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is a cooperative service with the Department of Pharmacy of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The IDS is responsible for the storage, preparation and proper labeling of investigational drugs in use at the hospital and the medical school. The service is involved in creation of pharmacy portions of investigator-initiated protocols and in the acquisition of drug product for studies within the medical school community. In addition, the IDS provides the necessary information and education about investigational drugs to the pharmacy and nursing staffs in both institutions.

Services Provided

  • Protocol Review and Pharmacy Budget for sponsored protocols
  • Protocol Development/Review of investigator-initiated protocols
  • Assist in the design and use of pharmaceuticals in study protocols
  • Provide drug information for all aspects of the study including the creation of patient drug information
  • Formulate study budget for drug acquisition, supplies, and dispensing; the IDS will utilize companies that have experience in providing services in research protocols
  • Create and Investigational Drug Data Sheet (IDDS) that concisely summarizes for the medical, nursing, and pharmacy staffs the pertinent information for use and administration of the study drug
  • Create a study binder that contains at the minimum: a copy of the protocol; detailed drug preparation & dispensing procedures; drug accountability records; randomization procedures & code, if applicable; the IDDS; labels & study contact information.
