Fourth Year

Required Clerkship in Emergency Medicine

Overview

Four weeks of Emergency Medicine are required during the fourth year and must be taken at home campus.

Overall Educational Goal

The overall goal of this clerkship is for the student to develop diagnostic and therapeutic skills in an emergency department setting.

Objectives

Letters in parenthesis refer to which of the six core competencies this objective addresses: Medical Knowledge (MK), Patient Care (PC), Professionalism (P), Communication and Interpersonal Skills (C), Practice Based Learning and Improvement (PBL), and Systems Based Practice (SBP)

  • Demonstrate skill in completing an appropriately tailored history and physical exam in the emergent setting. (MK, PC, P, C)
  • Demonstrate the ability to synthesize an appropriate differential diagnosis for some of the most common emergency department complaints (chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, blunt trauma, and altered mental status) and create an appropriate workup and treatment plan for these patients. (MK, PC)
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the role of emergency ultrasonography in patient care (MK, PC)
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the role of prehospital care in trauma and chest pain patients. (SBP, PC)
  • Use ED patient care experiences along with appropriate educational resources to improve their understanding of emergency medicine. (PBL)
