The Developmental Disabilities Lecture Series is a community and continuing education program provided for Division of Developmental Disabilities staff, community provider agencies, people with disabilities, and family members to enhance their knowledge and skills in innovative approaches and state of the art practices for people with developmental disabilities.

Eight sessions of the Developmental Disabilities Lecture Series are held each year, four in the Fall, and four in the Spring. Nationally known speakers with expertise in their field serve as faculty for the program, each conducting a morning presentation and providing technical assistance in an afternoon forum. Over 1,500 people attend the Developmental Disabilities Lecture Series each year.

Creating Community Based Individualized Housing Opportunities
for People with Disabilities

This session will present an array of proven strategies and methods utilized throughout the United States for creating person-controlled community based rental housing and home ownership opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Topics to be discussed include rental and home ownership resources, asset-building strategies, and community partnerships to obtain generic community housing.

Patient Centered Health Homes for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Dr. Bassford will provide an overview of the history and key concepts of patient centered health homes, along with the evidence supporting health homes. She will discuss their utility in providing high quality, satisfying care to adults with developmental disabilities, and the initial experience in establishing such a home at the University of Arizona Family Medicine Center.

Pivotal Response Treatment for Autism

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is a research-based behavioral intervention model which has been adopted as a best practice in education by the State of California and is listed as one of the top ten comprehensive treatments for Autism by the National Academy of Sciences. Pivotal responses are key aspects of interaction that affect widespread areas of functioning. Dr. Koegel will provide an overview of PRT, emphasizing the pivotal areas of motivation and initiations. The presentation will include video clips that demonstrate the use of these techniques.

Maximizing Quality of Life with Person-Centered Cognitive Support Technologies

Emerging cognitive support technologies resulting from evidenced-based research are having a transformational impact on the independence and self-determination of individuals with developmental disabilities. This session will illustrate state-of-the-art technologies for social connectedness, transportation, and self-directed supports, developed specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities to facilitate their independence. The symbiotic relationship of these supports with innovative Smart Living Technologies, such as cloud-based technologies for care giving, also will be presented.
