Customized Employment Initiative

The New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities, Griffin-Hammis Associates, and The Boggs Center are sponsoring a six-session training series on customized employment. Attendance at all six sessions will result in National Certification in Community Employment Services through the Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE). Each session stands alone in its content, so educators, transition coordinators, employment specialists, case managers, employment seekers and family members should feel free to register for any sessions of interest.

Customized Employment Initiative Day 1: Introduction to Customized Employment & the Discovery Process

Most typical strategies for attaining employment include producing a resume, applying for existing positions, and competing with a large number of people applying for that same job. People with disabilities usually don’t do well in this competitive job search. Customized Employment (CE) takes a more individualized approach to employment that is designed to meet both the needs of the prospective employee and employer. This session introduces you to the guiding values, flexible funding strategies, and customization of services most effective to assist individuals with complex barriers to employment.

Customized Employment Initiative Day 3: Customized Job Development & Interest-Based Negotiation

The standard competitive model of hiring is to compare one applicant to another and to hire the best qualified. This model typically works against anyone with complex support needs. Changing this equation in order to highlight an individual’s unique qualifications requires a new approach to negotiation that emphasizes the satisfaction of both the interests of the employer and the job seeker. Join us to learn about this approach.
