ArchivesSummer 2011The Boggs Center Welcomes 2011-2012 Student Trainee Shamika Boswell is participating in The Boggs Center's Interdisciplinary Traineeship Program coordinated by Caroline Coffield, PhD, Instructor of Pediatrics and Interdisciplinary Training Coordinator of The Boggs Center. Shamika, a MSW student at Rutgers University School of Social Work is an advanced standing student who started her field placement at The Boggs Center this summer and will continue through the 2011-2012 academic year. She will be supervised by Kathy Roberson, MSW, Policy and Information Coordinator.
The guide, Autism and Faith: A Journey into Community, has been reprinted by the Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities with funding from the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities. The guides are now available in both English and Spanish. Autism and Faith is a collaborative product of The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Autism New Jersey (formerly COSAC), and The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation. The project and first printing were generously funded by a grant from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation. Autism and Faith grew out of the efforts and concerns of families and congregations who were looking for ways to include children and adults with autism in faith communities. With articles by family members, theologians, pastors, rabbis, people with autism, and professionals, the booklet contains facts about autism, pastoral care, religious education, strategies for supporting families, tips for lay people, and a listing of religious and public resources. The articles are highlighted by real life stories from a number of families who responded to an autism and faith survey. The guide has been very popular with families and congregations, a resource that has led to a number of inclusive religious education and congregational opportunities, including being able to participate in religious rites of transition such as confirmation, First Communion, and others. The guides are free of charge to people in New Jersey. Out of state orders are $5 each for shipping and handling. The guides may be downloaded for free in both English and Spanish. The Boggs Center sponsored two students in the 2011 program, who conducted internships at agencies serving people with developmental disabilities, including The Arc of Mercer and The Boggs Center. The 2011 COPC Program culminated in a celebration event on July 18, 2011 with a poster session and recognition for community mentors and students. Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD, delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, commending the students for choosing careers of service.
